If your teeth have become weak due to damage or disease, inlays and onlays may be an ideal restoration option for you. These restorations have the capability to strengthen a weak tooth and to restore it in a natural-looking and long-lasting manner. They are a great alternative to large fillings or crowns when it comes to restoring cracked, broken or chipped teeth.
An inlay is used on the center and on the biting surface of a tooth. The restoration is filled to repair any damage to the structure of the tooth. A dental onlay, on the other hand, covers an area that includes one or more of the cusps of the tooth. Onlays are usually applied in cases where a considerable amount of damage has occurred.
Progress in dental technology now enables us to create dental inlays and onlays that perfectly fit your teeth and can be made to match the natural color of your teeth. With proper care, these can last for many years. Inlays and onlays can be easily cared for with regular brushing, flossing, and bi-annual visits to our office for checkups and cleanings.
The process of placing inlays and onlays generally takes two visits to our office to be completed. The procedure is conducted under the effect of local anesthesia and begins with the removal of existing decay in the tooth. Then, the tooth is prepared for receiving the restoration. An impression is taken to prepare your custom inlay or onlay, which is sent to a dental lab. Until then, a temporary restoration is placed over your teeth. Once the permanent restoration is ready, it is cemented on to the tooth and then polished to ensure a smooth finish.
